ABOUT US
Merton Abbey has a real mix of people from a diverse range of ages, professions, and backgrounds. We are a blend of Kent and Essex residents. Whilst the lodge ritual is important, so is having fun and enjoying the company.
The consecration ceremony of the Merton Abbey Lodge № 7742 was held at Freemasons Hall, Great Queen Street, London, WC2 on Monday 2nd January 1961
Masters Chosen Charity's 2025
Every day, anyone in the UK can be diagnosed with Crohn’s or Colitis, the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease, making it a life-changing experience. Since 1979, Crohn’s & Colitis UK has supported everyone affected by these conditions by providing a helpline for information and support, a network of local groups for connection and shared experiences, and online resources and virtual events. They also campaign for better services and fund research to improve the lives of those living with IBD.
Clowns in the Sky was established by Lynn Weston and Richard Chambers in memory of their three-year-old daughter, Jennifer, who passed away on 21 April 2004 after battling a brain tumour. Inspired by Jennifer’s ability to find joy during her treatment, the charity sponsors monthly visits from children’s entertainers to hospital wards, bringing laughter and distraction to young patients and their parents, which has received overwhelmingly positive feedback. They also provide portable activity and sensory trolleys to hospitals nationwide, offering stimulation and fun for children anytime, especially when playrooms are closed or when children are confined to their beds.
West Kent 2026 Festival Target!
“Our aim is to “Make a Difference” in all of our activities – whether this is through individual Lodges, our interaction with each other as members, or our relationship with the community as a whole.”
– Mark Estaugh Provincial Grand Master of West Kent
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is among the largest and oldest non-religious and non-political fraternal and charitable organisations. It is open to everybody, regardless of background. It is different things to different people, but most find that making friends within your lodge and, visiting others, helping others through supporting charities are among the main reasons for being a Freemason.
Our Values
Rather than working on buildings like the Masons of old, today’s Freemasons focus on building themselves as people of integrity, and membership provides the structure to help achieve that goal.
One of the oldest social organisations in the world, Freemasonry is not defined by an ideology. It is open to people from all religions and political persuasions and provides the common foundation for friendships between members, many of which will last for life.
With a membership of more than 200,000 people drawn from communities across the UK, Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or any other perceived differences that can divide us as a society
Kindness and charitable giving are deeply ingrained within the principles of Freemasonry. The organisation provides a support structure that helps members make positive contributions to communities and worthwhile causes through fundraising events or volunteer work.
You don’t need to be invited; ask! If you think Freemasonry might be for you or want to learn more, please get in touch with us. We are very happy to discuss and explain any aspects of Freemasonry to help you better understand the organisation and its members.
